How keyword clusters work
What is a keyword cluster?
A keyword cluster is a group of related search terms organized around one central pillar topic. The pillar page covers the broad topic comprehensively, while sub-pillar pages target specific long-tail variations. All pages interlink, sending topical authority signals to search engines and helping users navigate related content. Learn more in my guide to SEO fundamentals.
What is a pillar page in SEO?
A pillar page is a comprehensive, long-form page that covers a broad topic in depth and links out to more specific sub-topic pages. It acts as the hub of a content cluster, consolidating topical authority. Google rewards this structure because it mirrors how users actually explore a subject — starting broad and drilling into specifics.
How many sub-pillar pages should a cluster have?
A strong cluster typically has 4 to 8 sub-pillar pages. Fewer than 4 and the cluster lacks depth. More than 8 and you risk keyword cannibalization or thin content. This tool generates 5 sub-pillars as a starting point — you can expand or trim based on your keyword research and competitive analysis.
How does internal linking work in a topic cluster?
Every sub-pillar page links back to the pillar page, and the pillar page links to every sub-pillar. Sub-pillars can also cross-link to each other where relevant. This creates a tight internal link network that tells Google all these pages are topically related, boosting the entire cluster's authority for the seed keyword.
Is this tool free and does it store my data?
Completely free with no usage limits and no account required. It runs entirely in your browser. Your keyword inputs are never sent to any server, never stored, and never shared. Everything happens locally on your device.
