Strategy without research is just an opinion with confidence.

The reason most SEO and content strategies fail isn't bad execution — it's that the strategy was based on intuition rather than data. A founder picks "the keywords we should rank for" based on what they think their customers search. The team writes content for those keywords. Six months later, the traffic isn't there because the keywords have low volume, the wrong intent, or competition the brand can't realistically displace. The execution was fine; the targets were wrong.

Research fixes that. Real keyword research starts with understanding search intent (informational vs commercial vs transactional), maps the competitive landscape (who's ranking now and how strong they are), identifies content gaps (what's missing from current SERPs), and produces a topic cluster roadmap that compounds. Real competitor analysis goes beyond "what keywords do they rank for" and looks at why — backlink profiles, content depth, internal linking, schema usage, brand authority. Real market research uses search data to surface unmet demand and positioning opportunities.

I run research as standalone projects (you take the deliverable in-house) or as the first phase of larger engagements. Either way, the output is a research document that gives your team a defensible plan: which topics to pursue, which to ignore, what to build first, how long it'll take, and what success looks like.

FAQ

Common research questions.

Can't I just use Ahrefs or Semrush myself?

You can — and many teams do, badly. The tools generate data; the value is in interpretation. Choosing which keywords matter (vs which are vanity targets), grouping them into topic clusters, scoring competition realistically, and building a sequenced roadmap is craft work. Tools alone produce keyword lists; research produces strategy.

How big is a typical keyword research deliverable?

Depends on niche. A focused single-vertical research project might cover 200–500 keywords in 15–30 topic clusters with content brief outlines for the top 30 priorities. A broad multi-product or multi-region project might cover 2,000+ keywords. Quoted by scope.

Do you handle Tagalog and Taglish keyword research?

Yes. PH keyword research has a different challenge than English-only work — you have to capture how Filipinos actually search, which is heavily code-switched. I use a combination of standard tools, manual Google search behaviour analysis, and PH-specific sources to surface keywords international consultants miss.

Will you tell me what content to write?

Yes — that's the point. Research deliverables don't just list keywords; they include content brief outlines (search intent, recommended structure, key sub-questions to address, schema recommendations, target word count, internal links). Your content team can execute against the briefs without re-doing the research work.

How long does research take?

Keyword research: 1–3 weeks. Competitor analysis: 2–4 weeks. Market research: 3–6 weeks. Smaller niches go faster; broader scopes take longer. I send weekly progress updates throughout.

How current is the data?

Search volumes update monthly in tools like Ahrefs and Semrush, so research data is current as of the report date. Competitor positions change constantly — but the strategic recommendations (topics, intent matching, content gaps) are durable for 6–12 months because the underlying customer needs don't shift quickly.

Do you cover AI search visibility in research?

Optionally yes — research can include current ChatGPT/Perplexity/Gemini visibility for priority queries and a roadmap for AI optimisation. This is usually bundled with traditional keyword research as part of a single research engagement.

How much does research cost?

All services start at $499 USD per month with a one-time $20 admin fee that is fully deductible from the first month invoice. The $20 admin fee is non-refundable. Minimum commitment is 3 months; 6-month and 12-month plans are available. We onboard a maximum of 5 clients per service category at a time. See the Hire Me page for full details.
